March 5, 2010 Dear directors and parents,

Congratulations to you and your students selected this year for the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association District XVI Honors Bands.   would like to thank all of you that have nominated students.

As always we had a very deep pool of talented young musicians from which to choose.   As you are aware, there are two separate bands with one being comprised of 9th and 10th grade students and one with 11th and 12th grade students.   In the Excel spreadsheet you will find three sheets with one for each band and one for director volunteers.

Please extend the most sincere thanks to those students that could not be included in the instrumentation of the bands this year.  There were a total of 31 band directors contributing over 320 nominees for the two bands.

I have included: (click on the Link)

The list of students accepted in the band (see spreadsheets)

Director Information Packet

(included in above)   An acceptance letter you should copy and give to your selected nominees.
(included in above)  A schedule of rehearsals for students to follow
(included in above)  A map to Avondale High School

Please remind the selected members of both bands that members are required to be present for the full length of each rehearsal in order to be eligible to perform in the Tuesday evening concert.

THIS RULE WILL NOT BE ALTERED.  If there is any problem with this please contact me immediately so a substitute performer can be located and notified.

Sincerely,

Daniel T. Burdette,  Director of Bands
Avondale High School

 Parents: Please plan to attend!

Band & Orchestra Festival

Band and Orchestra Festival is an opportunity for ensembles from District XVI member schools to perform a program of three pieces for adjudication, one of which must be from MSBOA's required list.  The group also will be given 7 minutes to discuss two pieces which they have never seen before!  They must then perform these pieces for adjudication as well!  Each group is evaluated by three performance judges and one sight-reading judge.  All family and friends are encouraged to attend and support these amazing young performers.

ADMISSION IS FREE and there will be concessions available at every site with the proceeds going towards supporting band and orchestra programs at the host schools.

Scoring

Ensembles are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. The overall score is computed using a formula which combines the ratings of each judge. Ensembles that earn an overall 1 rating (or "Superior") are qualified for State Band & Orchestra Festival which is held in late April or early May. The basic structure of State Band & Orchestra Festival is the same as District, but the ensembles are held to a higher standard. Participating ensembles that earn a rating of 1 or 2 at District or State Festivals receive a certificate and are eligible to purchase plaques for display at their school and medals for each student.

Dates and Locations

The District XVI Festivals are held at numerous sites and over two weekends (March 5-6 and  12-13, 2010) due to the large number of schools and ensembles that participate. Links to a Google Map to each location as well as a complete schedule of events may be found below.
